Two Things…

While investigating the current issue with Google Earth, I discovered a couple things:

First, Google has now added support for Australia and New Zealand to Google Maps. I’ve had a lot of “requests” for this feature so I’m glad they’re finally supported. But please note, I have NO say in what countries are supported by Google Maps. Google probably doesn’t know that I exist.

Second, the problem with Google Earth is that, when you choose to lookup a single address in Google Earth via my plugins, Google Maps returns a KML file with this useless bit of information:

<Point>
    <coordinates>,,</coordinates>
</Point>
<LookAt>
    <longitude></longitude>
    <latitude></latitude>
    <range></range>
    <tilt></tilt>
    <heading></heading>
</LookAt>

Up until recently, these tags actually contained numbers! How about that.

I’m not sure if this is a temporary issue or if I should go ahead and work around the problem. Neither is ideal. If I work around the problem, what would happen is that the address you’re searching for would get passed to Google Earth, but there would be no auto-fly-to animation to its location (which is what makes Google Earth so much fun). If I ignore the problem for now, my inbox will get filled with with comments about Google Earth not working properly. =)

I also wanted to mention, that the previous bug with my plugins not saving your preferred countries has been fixed. Actually, I took it a step further and just gave you the option to choose which Google domain you prefer. I haven’t uploaded the new version yet though as I’m not finished testing. I’ll keep you updated.

What happened to Google Earth?

I’ve had a couple reports today of an odd occurrence with the Google Earth portion of my plugins. I’ve confirmed their findings with my early beta of Google Earth 4 that had been working successfully a couple weeks ago (at most).

From my findings, looking up a single address using the plugins will zoom to 0,0 regardless of where the address is supposed to be. Directions in Google Earth still seem to work OK, as do Google Maps.

I’m going to have to look into this issue over the weekend, but I wanted to post about it here incase anyone else has run into the problem.
